Bees, butterflies and trees,NCC
I would love to work in the field with environmental conservationists. I have development and conservation and worked for a short period of time at Elk Island. Sometimes, depending on the projects, I like to volunteer and help other organizations with nature conservation. NCC (Nature Conservancy of Canada) is an organization I have deep respect for. In the winter of 2021, I helped with their 0’christmas tree project. I have always found that real Christmas trees are very useless and expensive vanity. Often getting caught up in the joy of Christmas people don’t realize that a tree is a natural resource, home to other creatures and an element which helps clean our air. Often people buy a tree and throw it out after Christmas. Ok, sure it’s festive, it’s a celebration etc, but there needs to be a better more sustainable way of dealing with this vanity. So I was looking that up when I came across NCC, who was also on the same page. Anyways, long story short. They ran a project to cut down non-native trees (blue spruce) in a natural area that is under conservation care. So I helped cut down a few shooting sprouts of the non-native tree and helped them donate those to the community. In my opinion, it was the best immediate sustainable solution and this way I didn’t feel so bad having a tree this year. It was fun to go get one for myself and it was fun knowing it would create room for planting new native trees in the area. Since then, the NCC has had a native tree planting project in the area and if you want to know more or get involved, please feel free to visit the link below!
