Artist Statement
*Lifting My Canoe* is a reflection on resilience, independence, and the deep connection between the individual and the natural world. In this oil painting, I depict a lone canoe, lifted against the backdrop of a rugged mountain landscape, symbolizing the strength required to navigate both physical and emotional terrains. The act of lifting the canoe is a metaphor for the challenges we face in life, where moments of struggle and effort are often needed to achieve clarity and progress. The canoe, a vessel traditionally used for both travel and introspection, represents both movement and stillness—an embodiment of the balance between perseverance and rest.
The landscape, painted in soft yet contrasting tones, underscores the vastness and beauty of nature, emphasizing the profound relationship we share with the environment around us. The raw wooden frame further reinforces the organic, unrefined beauty of nature, allowing the viewer to focus on the simplicity and purity of the image itself.
This piece is particularly meaningful as it aligns with the themes of *Le Canoë Volant* (Flying Canoe), a French festival that celebrates resilience and independence, taking place in Edmonton each February. Just as the festival brings together elements of French heritage and Canadian traditions, *Lifting My Canoe* seeks to evoke the same spirit of strength, unity, and connection to the land.
Exhibit Information
I am honored to present *Lifting My Canoe* at the upcoming group show of French-Canadian artists at Galerie CAVA. The vernissage will be held on January 16th from 5-7pm, and I invite you to join me for this celebration of French culture and artistic expression. The exhibit will feature a range of works that explore themes of identity, heritage, and the natural world.
*Lifting My Canoe* is painted on a 16x20 inch canvas and framed in a raw wooden frame, allowing the natural beauty of the material to complement the artwork itself. I look forward to sharing this work with you and engaging in meaningful conversations about its themes and significance.
