“Grassy Lake Studio Study” Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Board Size: 12" x 16"
“Grassy Lake Studio Study” is an experimental acrylic painting inspired by the vibrant, colorful lake I encountered during a hike in the Rockies. This study diverges from the initial plein air sketch of the falls and focuses instead on capturing the unique, striking beauty of the lake itself. When I reached the lake, I was struck by its brilliance—the way the water shimmered under the sun and the surrounding grasses seemed to pulse with life. I knew I had to bring that energy into the studio.
Rather than focusing on fine details, this painting is an exploration of the overall mood and color palette of the scene. I wanted to express the emotional intensity of the landscape—the vibrancy of the water, the fluidity of the grasses, and the dynamic energy of the environment. The brushstrokes are loose and expressive, reflecting the abstract nature of the experience rather than aiming for a literal reproduction. The result is a piece that captures the essence of the lake, with bold, sweeping colors and a raw, unrefined feel.
While I’m satisfied with the energy of this piece, I feel it’s only the beginning. There’s something missing, perhaps a more imagined or stylized composition. I plan to revisit this scene from memory in a new, freer way—bringing my imagination into the composition to see what emerges.
This painting is part of an ongoing exploration into abstraction and the emotional power of landscape, where I focus more on feeling and color than on perfect representation.
