Awakening Rays
Description:
This 6x8 inch watercolor painting captures the quiet yet powerful moment when light breaks through the stillness of nature. Painted on cold-press watercolor paper, the piece features rays of light emerging from behind a tree, illuminating the landscape below. The delicate play of light and shadow is brought to life using rich Windsor & Newton watercolors, including Prussian Blue, Yellow Ochre, Sienna, Gap Green, and Cadmium Yellow.
The deep blues and earth tones blend harmoniously, evoking a sense of tranquility and renewal.
In my pursuit of capturing light in watercolor, I decided to take an online class with the Russian watercolor artist Ilya Ibryaev, whose work I discovered on social media. His mastery of painting rays of light intrigued me, and I was excited to learn how he achieved such luminous effects. After two lessons with him, I felt deeply relaxed and inspired. While I usually paint vertically on an easel—quite different from his approach—I still found a way to incorporate his techniques, especially in capturing the light pouring through the tree. His guidance was invaluable, and this painting is a result of that experience.
This piece invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and bask in the gentle warmth of the natural world, as I continue to explore the ever-challenging but rewarding process of painting light.
