“Lorette Ponds Take Two” explores the subtle transformation in the landscape as seen through the shifting shadows and reflections beneath the towering presence of the mountain. On this second visit to the ponds, the conditions were strikingly similar to my first—cool temperatures, soft light—but the mood was noticeably different. The atmosphere felt quieter, more introspective, as the reflections in the water were imbued with deeper shadows that extended beneath the surface, adding a layer of mystery and depth to the scene.

In this piece, I focused more closely on the play of light and shadow in the water, particularly the shadows that stretched beneath the mountain and its surrounding trees. The muted reflections created a sense of stillness, contrasting with the softer, more dynamic ripples I observed during my initial visit. I used watercolor to capture the subtle gradations of light, where the shadows darkened the water’s surface, while still maintaining the natural beauty of the reflected landscape. The dark hues created by the shadows beneath the mountain served to anchor the composition, providing a quiet counterpoint to the mountain’s towering presence.

Though painted under similar conditions to the first piece, the mood here is different—more subdued, with an almost contemplative feel. The shadows are richer, and the reflections seem more tangible, as if the water itself is holding a secret beneath its calm exterior.
