“Atmosphere on Cascade Falls” captures the chaotic yet serene energy of the Cascade Falls, where the surrounding landscape seems to pulse with movement, yet remains utterly still in its majesty. Painted in the height of winter, this piece was born out of the overwhelming feeling of constant activity—the rush of water, the rustling of trees, the dark clouds swirling above, and the weight of the cool mountain air. Despite the busyness of the scene, there was an undeniable stillness, as if time had slowed down to let me absorb every detail.

The waterfall itself was narrow and thin, yet surrounded by an explosion of life and energy—the trees bending under the wind, the clouds creating ripples in the sky, and the hills stretching out beyond, all contributing to the complex atmosphere. I focused on capturing the chaos of it all, working quickly with watercolor to convey the unpredictable movement, while adding pen strokes to highlight the contours of the landscape—the natural edges that created form amidst the frenetic energy. The pen work in this piece adds a sense of structure to the apparent disarray, guiding the viewer’s eye through the turbulence while maintaining a sense of harmony in the scene.

The second time I visited Cascade Falls, the air was warmer, and the landscape felt calmer, but the essence of the falls remained the same—majestic and powerful, yet layered with so much movement. This initial chaotic version captures the raw energy of nature, while also hinting at the quieter moments that followed.
